Reading Instructions

Start reading Tarot cards without repeating my silly mistakes.

Get organized to read the Tarot quickly and easily!

Want to start reading Tarot cards with flair and skill? Read the ideas below and learn how to prepare (before laying out a single Tarot card)!

1. Remove any and all distractions.

This would include turning off your phone, ignoring the computer, and making sure those around you -spouses, kids, room-mates, family- understand you need a certain amount of alone time to concentrate.

I also recommend a pet-free zone, especially when you first start reading Tarot cards. Cards can become at best obscured or worse, bent or creased (or chewed)if a cat decides to read with you. My dog becomes a little whiny whenever I break a Tarot deck out. I speak from experience. If you want to concentrate, exclude Fido and Meow when you start reading Tarot cards.

This is the time to quiet your mind. Remove anything you think will keep you from getting there. Start reading Tarot cards with the habit of creating a peaceful reading environment.

2. Clear some flat and level space.

After years of test research, I can conclude that reading Tarot cards in bed is not ideal. Ditto to cluttered tables or any other surface where your cards can shift position.

Cautionary tale: I started reading Tarot cards anywhere and many of my readings were cut short - a card avalanche occurred just because I was too lazy to clear a little space. Being comfortable is a must, especially for long readings; when you first start to read Tarot cards, readings will take a little longer. A well-lit work area with plenty of elbow room is ideal. Adding a nice cloth and a candle makes it a little more special.

Creating a pleasant environment to read in is a sign of respect to yourself and the Tarot cards.

3. Pick your deck.

Choose the right Tarot deck for the job. Imagery that speaks to you is a great way to start reading Tarot cards. If you have just one deck, your choice is simple.

If you haven't found the deck of your dreams, check out this article on choosing a Tarot deck. Start reading Tarot cards with a deck that you love and feel comfortable with. A strong connection with your Tarot cards will make you a better reader.

4. Do the shuffle.

Pick your focus and let the cards know what it is. The shuffle begins your physical connection when you start a Tarot reading.

If you are just starting to read Tarot cards, read on. As I always tell my clients: Hold the cards any way you feel comfortable and shuffle them while concentrating on what you want to know. The more specific your questions, the more detailed the answers you will receive. When the cards feel ready or right to you, then please hand them back to me.

5. Cut.

Before you start reading the Tarot cards, divide the main Tarot deck in to three piles then choose (you or your querent) which mini deck you'd like to use for the reading.

There are many schools of thought concerning which hand to cut the deck with (left or right), whether the querent or the reader cuts (easy answer if you're reading for yourself), and even whether to divide the deck to the left or right.

While this might not be a popular answer, when you start to read Tarot cards, it is the perfect time to create your own traditions. My clients have found no difference in the quality of my readings, regardless of who handles which cards with what hand. Just work with whatever makes you comfortable.
